Shakshuka essentially means ‘all mixed up’ in Arab. It is a combination of poached eggs, tomatoes, and Middle-East’s signature spices which are: ground coriander, caraway, paprika, cumin and cayenne pepper.
Historically, Shakshuka was a meat-and-egg dish from North Africa, with no tomatoes. But in recent days, Shakshuka is famously known as a tomato-and-eggs dish from Middle East and Israel in particular. The new version of Shakshuka was introduced by Jewish immigrants from Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, and Libya. When the immigrations from North African countries to Israel increases, most of the immigrants face financial difficulties and this healthy and affordable dish quickly became a household favorites.
The best thing of Shakshuka is the simplicity and flexibility of this dish. It is very easy to make, no need much ingredients, and not using many utensils as it is a one-pan meal. Beside its simple ingredients, Shakshuka is rich in protein and low in fat which makes it a perfect staple dish.
