Fresh Sourdough Bread in Bali: Classic and Gluten-Free, Baked in Canggu

Looking for real sourdough in Bali? At The Sweet Escape Bakery in Canggu, we bake sourdough the traditional way, with our own sourdough starter, in two versions: a classic sourdough and a gluten-free sourdough. That means everyone can enjoy that tangy flavour and satisfying chew, including guests who avoid gluten.

What Makes Sourdough Special?

Sourdough is one of the oldest ways of making bread. Instead of relying only on commercial yeast, it uses a sourdough starter: a living culture of natural yeasts and bacteria that slowly ferments the dough. That slow fermentation is what gives sourdough its signature tangy taste, its open, chewy crumb and its deep golden crust.

Our Classic Sourdough

Prefer a traditional loaf? Our classic sourdough has the deep, tangy flavour and crisp crust that sourdough lovers look for. It’s available at our café in Canggu and for orders; just ask when you message us.

Our Gluten-Free Sourdough

Our gluten-free sourdough is our best-selling gluten-free bread. It’s made with a special blend of gluten-free flours and our own sourdough starter, so it keeps the tangy flavour and chewy texture you expect from a good sourdough.

Ingredients: gluten-free flour, yeast, salt and egg.

Gluten-Free Beetroot Sourdough

For something more colourful, try our gluten-free beetroot sourdough. Fresh beetroot purée gives it a beautiful natural colour and a gentle sweetness that works with both savoury and sweet toppings.

Ingredients: beetroot, gluten-free flour, salt and sourdough starter.

How to Enjoy Your Sourdough

  • Breakfast toast: with avocado, eggs, or butter and jam
  • Sandwiches: its sturdy crumb holds generous fillings
  • With soup or salad: perfect for dipping
  • Bruschetta: toasted and topped with tomato, garlic and olive oil
  • Brunch boards: sliced alongside cheeses, dips and fresh fruit

How to Keep Sourdough Fresh

Gluten-free bread is at its best fresh or toasted. A few simple tips:

  • Keep it in a paper bag or bread box at room temperature and enjoy within a few days.
  • Bali is warm and humid, so avoid sealed plastic bags on the counter, which can make bread go soft or mouldy.
  • To keep it longer, slice it and freeze it. Toast slices straight from the freezer.
